On January 17th, 1776 the Council of Safety ordered “the foundry, furnace lands and ore l>eds on the estate of Richard Smith, late of Boston, now gone to the enemy,” taken over. Smith was located in Boston at the dawn of the Revolution. Built in 1762 and sold by the original builder to Richard Smith of Hartford in 1768.
